This exciting and flexible new course has been designed for both beginner and developing artists looking to significantly enhance their understanding and practice of fundamental drawing techniques, with each four week block of classes concentrating on either classical or contemporary approaches.

Unit 1: Classical Drawing with Pilar de la Torre

Throughout this unit students will explore subjects such as still life, the figure, and landscapes in a series of set observational exercises that will inform how to visually deconstruct and then reconstruct images, to produce layered drawings imbued with feeling.

Award-winning Melbourne based artist Pilar de la Torre has been honing her drawing skills ever since winning the Thea Proctor Scholarship at Julian Ashton Art School Sydney. Her passion for art has led her to travel and study in Italy, France and Russia, and has also resulted in several awards including the Tom Robert’s Prize for a non-landscape. Pilar’s personal philosophy of ‘constant and never ending improvement’ has exposed her to many schools of thought with regards to drawing and painting, which she continues to share through her extensive teaching experience in classes across Melbourne.

Unit 2: Contemporary Drawing with Brock Q. Piper

Over four weeks this unit will introduce students to some of the key principles of abstraction, through a series of guided experimental exercises that will help to develop a range of fundamental drawing techniques, and the creation of a series of contemporary non-figurative drawings.

Brock Q. Piper is regarded as one of Melbourne’s most exciting abstract artists, and with a professional practice spanning over 10 years, he has exhibited in galleries around Australia and has also recently completed an AIR in Mexico. Brock’s classes are thoughtful and energetic, and his passion and commitment to sharing his deep knowledge with students that are keen to develop their creativity, and ability to produce works that contain both personal expression and artistic technique, ensure that you leave the studio feeling proud and inspired.
