You’ll love the warm, supportive environment of Melbourne Studio of Art’s Elsternwick studios. We take art seriously, but there’s always time for lively discussions with kindred spirits around an easel.

A message from Dena Lester, Founder and Director of Melbourne Studio of Art and Art Encounters

Let us guide you on your creative journey

I’m passionate about teaching art because I believe we all have an artist within waiting to emerge.

However, without learning the basic technical skills of drawing and painting under a professional art tutor, few people achieve their creative potential.

I founded Art Encounters in 1998 to provide a supportive and inspirational place where creative children and adults could study art.

Our Elsternwick studios are now home to two art schools. Art Encounters continues to offer art courses for children aged 5-16, while the new Melbourne Studio of Art (MSA), offers a wide range of long and short adult art courses in painting, drawing and life drawing.

MSA’s drawing and painting courses give aspiring artists more than the technical skills they need: For many, an art course is the beginning of a life-long artistic journey.

I love seeing the creative flame burning in men and women of all ages and backgrounds as they rekindle their passion for creating art in our drawing and painting classes. Even experienced artists learn new skills and gain fresh insights with professional tuition under accomplished, exhibiting artists.

Young or old, students love the social experience, too: The dynamic workshop atmosphere, and the stimulating discussions with people who share their artistic passion.

We often see friendships blossom beyond the studio into social outings, painting excursions, art exhibitions and, of course, endless discussions about art over lunch or coffee. I’m sure our ground-floor cafe will become a meeting place for lovers of the Fine Arts.

If you, or someone you know, is ready to begin a creative journey through art, contact us today for more details or to book a place in one of our many art courses.
